“Gout is a disease caused by uric acid deposits in body tissues, both in joints and tendons, skin, kidneys and even organs such as the heart. The most common symptoms are those related to joint inflammation, although nowadays it is also recognized as a cardiovascular risk factor, as well as being a possible trigger for renal pathology,” explains Dr. Alejandro Prada, a rheumatologist at the University Hospital of Torrejón and spokesman for the Spanish Society of Rheumatology (SER).

How can Gout Attacks be prevented?

Gout symptoms always occur suddenly and, as a rule, at night. Patients suffering from these problems experience intense joint pain, after which they feel a permanent discomfort that can last for one or several days. In addition, they may also experience swelling of their joints and reduced mobility.

In the event that a person experiences severe joint pain, they should contact their doctor so that he or she can make a diagnosis and give them the treatment they need, as, if left untreated, the disease will worsen and further affect the joints.

To prevent its appearance, patients who have a significant presence of uric acid in their organism should adapt their diet to reduce the consumption of red meat, fatty or blue fish, seafood, sausages and canned fish.

In addition, they should drink plenty of fluids and avoid the consumption of soft drinks with fructose and alcohol. In this regard, they should be especially careful with beer, as this drink can have a much more harmful effect on our organism due to its high purine content.

If a patient is overweight, he/she should try to eliminate it, since overweight people produce more uric acid and, consequently, are more prone to suffer from this disease. However, when it comes to losing weight, it is important to avoid miracle diets, as these can increase hyperuricemia.

People diagnosed with hyperuricemia should also follow the medical treatment they have been diagnosed with and undergo regular blood tests to keep their blood uric acid level low.
